Meerut district, despite being situated between rivers Yamuna and Ganga, is facing acute water crisis and has been counted among 21 cities that are nearing Day Zero , day on which the taps in city would run dry.(article) . In last 10 years alone, the groundwater has fallen from 40 feet to over 200 feet below surface, and the drinking water availability & quality has severely deteriorated, causing public health issues.
MCF has taken various initiatives to improve water management & conservation in city, ranging from raising public awareness, publishing research on district water issues, pond rejuvenation, river cleanliness, advocacy with govt for reclaiming encroached water reservoirs, etc.
